Editors Note: Historical stuffs written by Oz in March 1995
The arrival to Terrace by my family was similar to the arrival in Wells several years earlier. It was a streneous journey, again in the winter, with several parts of "Highway 16" being impassable, except that cars were towed through the mud holes.
My mother says that she was not impressed, dogs running through the kitchen and a general uncleanliness everywhere. My family stayed with the Bushmans in Dutch Valley until spring.
In spring arrangement was made with Pohles Lumber Mill which was still operating at the Kalum Lake road site to buy a small cabin which was transported to the top edge of Dutch valley for my family to live in. It was a simple house with two rooms and possibly still stands on the property today. (I suppose it might be a heritage site).
In 1959 my father and his brother started the construction of a house which was to be for my uncle to live in. The concept was that everybody pitched in and helped build one house then everybody would pitch in and build the next house.
This particular house was picked from a book and the plans were sent for. My father who had apprenticed as a brick layer built it out of bricks. These bricks were actually made on site in molds. The house was situated such that an automobile garage could be put in the basement with access to the road that went down into Dutch Valley. (This has proven to be a folly as the house is not within the bounds of the property now!)
I do have some memories of the house being built, "haus krantz" which was put up on a pole higher than the roof rafters (while the roof was not yet in place) was to keep evil spirits out. It seems that this was a new custom to the people of Terrace.
